Tim Burton says his two Batman movies have been “brought to life in a fresh way” in a new version hitting cinemas.
Batman (1989) and its surreal sequel Batman Returns are returning to theatres for one‑night-only – this time in 4K, with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos remastering.
But there’s bad news for Batfans outside America. This Dolby Cinema event on August 25 seems only to be happening in 160 AMC Theatres across the US.
Burton said: “I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity, beauty, color, and sound felt really new and exciting. Dolby Atmos and Vision brought it all to life in a fresh way.”

Michelle Maddalena, Vice President of Global Content and Industry Relations at Dolby, said: “Batman and Batman Returns remain seminal films in the history of the Super Hero genre.
“The new presentation of these films in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos honors Tim Burton’s bold creativity while showcasing how far audio and image technology have evolved.”

“These films deliver a dark, iconic vision of Gotham City that continues to influence the modern Super Hero genre today,” said Jeff Goldstein, President of Global Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures. “With their advancements over the past decades, Dolby now transforms these beloved classics into completely new cinematic experiences through Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, delivering unprecedented visual and audio fidelity.”

Batman originally shattered expectations when it premiered in 1989, transforming the superhero genre with its dark, gothic style and star‑making turn by Michael Keaton. Its follow‑up, Batman Returns (1992), embraced an even more twisted and artistically bold approach, featuring memorable performances by Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman and Danny DeVito’s Penguin.
These screenings afford fans and newcomers alike the chance to experience Burton’s visionary take on Gotham with crystal‑sharp picture quality, deeper blacks, richer colours, and immersive audio that elevates everything from the rumble of the batmobile to the echoing halls of Gotham Cathedral.
This August’s one-night event is more than a screening — it’s a celebration of cinematic history through cutting-edge presentation. Whether you’re reliving the gothic Batman magic or discovering Burton’s idiosyncratic world for the first time, the Dolby master screenings offer an immersive, high-fidelity return to Gotham’s dark heart.
