Hall of Fame welcomes Hannibal Lecter

The Silence of the Lambs Has Been Inducted Into the Rewind Hall of Fame.

Jonathan Demme’s 1991 thriller earns its place in our hallowed hall of all-time classics thanks to our Patreons.

The nomination came from Patreon member Kat, who put the film forward for consideration at the monthly Patreon Live Hangout – the monthly event where the community comes together to debate, discuss, and ultimately decide which films are worthy of the highest honour Rewind has to offer. Going up against five other titles, The Silence of the Lambs came out on top. Though it was incredibly close with Titanic and needed a second round of voting.

Released in 1991 and based on Thomas Harris’s novel, the film follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling as she’s tasked with getting inside the mind of incarcerated cannibal Hannibal Lecter in order to catch another serial killer at large. The result is one of cinema’s most electrifying character pairings and one of the rare films that only seems to get better with repeat viewings.

Kat put it best in her nomination: “It has everything – drama, suspense, action. It’s so well written and acted. The relationship between Clarice and Hannibal is captivating and unsettling. And even though I’ve watched it time after time it still draws me back in. It’s no wonder it won so many awards, even in a year of strong movies.”

That year of strong movies was 1992’s awards season and The Silence of the Lambs dominated it, winning all five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It remains one of only three films in history to achieve that sweep.

The Silence of the Lambs is now officially part of the Rewind Hall of Fame. Want to have your say on what gets inducted next? Join the Rewind Patreon to vote in the monthly Live Hangout.
