MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (1987): Scariest Skeletor & Synths!

We Rewind to 1987 for the live action debut of He-Man to find out that Skeleton really was terrifyingly scary.

Few films from the 1980s carry quite the same blend of childhood nostalgia, playground memories, and unanswered questions as Masters of the Universe. The live-action adaptation of the beloved cartoon and toy franchise promised to bring He-Man, Skeletor, and the world of Eternia to the big screen for the first time. What arrived was something a little more complicated – and a lot more interesting, in a way – than anyone quite expected.

Directed by Gary Goddard (with an interestingly slim feature film CV, and a questionable ‘Sexual assault allegations’ section on Wikipedia) and produced by the infamously budget-conscious Cannon Group, Masters of the Universe arrived in cinemas the same year as RoboCop, Predator, and The Running Man.

It didn’t exactly conquer the box office. But for a certain generation of kids who grew up with the cartoon, the toys, and the lunchboxes, this film was everything.

Dolph Lundgren stars as He-Man, the impossibly muscled defender of Eternia, with Frank Langella delivering a villain turn as Skeletor that the film arguably doesn’t deserve. The story pulls He-Man and his companions away from the familiar fantasy world of Eternia and lands them somewhere rather more grounded – with consequences that were controversial then and remain divisive now.

Expect nostalgia, strong opinions, and at least one Michael Jackson impression.

Is it a masterpiece? Almost certainly not. Is it worth your time? That’s exactly what this episode is here to find out.

  1. Great podcast! For all its faults, this was still a hugely enjoyable movie. And Frank Langella managed to turn a rather lovable character in the cartoon into one of the greatest villains of the 1980s. Yes, he really was that good.
